For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.

Our Parish Community
We are truly thankful and praise God for all the blessings that He has bestowed upon us for nearly 90 years as a parish community. In this section of the website, we are looking at our community in two ways – the community that exists at St. Nicholas Church and our place in the greater community of the East Village.
The first is the fulfillment of legacy started by our church’s founding members. They instilled in us the importance of coming together in worship at the Divine Liturgy each week. Their devotion to the Orthodox Christian Faith and the Grace of the Holy Spirit were the ties that were brought with them from Czechoslovakia and anchored them as new immigrants to the United States. Pride in their heritage and sense of community remains a tremendous example for us today. Many of the parish organizations, traditions and activities of the present day St. Nicholas Church began in three villages in the Carpathian Mountains.
Today, the St. Nicholas Church community is much different than in the early days of our church. Rather than living locally, nearly all parishioners live in the greater Metropolitan New York region (New York, New Jersey and Connectictut) foregoing much closer Orthodox churches to attend services with “family”. We understand that with all of the blessings we have been given, comes a great responsibility to ensure that the church remains a vibrant, active parish for the next generation.
Just as it is hard to describe the eclectic and diverse community of the East Village, we too are a mixture of several cultural backgrounds. Many of us are Carpatho-Russians, Americans and New Yorkers. We are proud of our heritage, and are patriotic to the United States, even singing God Bless America at the end of Divine Liturgy each Sunday. We were deeply affected by the tragedy of 9/11 and we will never forget. We embrace our location in the East Village and routinely eat pirohy (perogies) and blintzes at our favorite restaurant, Odessa or a hot pastrami sandwich at Katz Deli.
Newcomers and visitors are always welcome at St. Nicholas to visit and pray with us. You will discover a welcoming Church family and perhaps even a spiritual home where you may want to plant roots. Welcome.
