Hebrews 2:12
Early in the history of St. Nicholas Church, parishioners had a great love for church music along with social and athletic activity. According to archival records, SS. Cyril and Methodious Carpatho-Russian Choral Society was formed on September 24, 1925. This was the day before the first service was held for the newly formed, and yet unnamed group of Carpatho-Russian immigrants, that were to be the first parishioners of St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church. St. Nicholas Choir was established to instill the spirit of the Orthodox Christianity and to pass on this spirit and the Slavonic traditions of our forefathers through the medium of choral singing.
Generations of Choir members have held to this mission through their singing of the Divine Liturgy at not only St. Nicholas Church, but in other Orthodox Churches in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. For countless years, Friday night Choir rehearsals, under the direction of Lou Dolhy, were the norm, and a means for the youth of the parish to rehearse and socialize. The Choir room, adjacent to the choir loft was full of
activity, playing pool and ping pong with late night visits to Katz Deli and Mom's in the East Village or to Nathan's in Coney Island. The Choir has also put on musical productions in the church hall, and participated in Choir Concerts throughout the area. They have held true to their aim to bring parishioners together together through social and athletic activities, hosted their annual Halloween Parties for children and New Year’s Dances, along with participation in Bowling and Softball tournaments.
Today, cantor services are offered by Nicholas Timko and Robert Zizik. On holidays, especially during Paschal services, the choir loft is once again filled and the beautiful voices of the St. Nicholas Choir fill the air as they have for over seventy-five years.
